The basics

About physiotherapy & physical rehabilitation

Without regular exercise, muscles and ligaments weaken and develop fibrotic scar tissue, which reduces the elasticity of the muscles that support your joints. In the spine, that leads to uneven wear and tear of the spinal joints — and over time, to degenerative changes in the discs and surrounding soft tissue.

A therapeutic exercise program helps slow that degenerative process and restores tone and balance to damaged tissues. Dr. Joe prescribes the specific exercises your body needs and progresses them as you improve, so the gains you make in the office keep building between visits.

Our physiotherapy services

Your plan draws on the modalities that fit your injury and your stage of healing:

Electro-Muscle Stimulation

A safe electrical current is applied at the site of injury, particularly to muscles. We recommend it when pain is accompanied by swelling, inflammation, and muscle spasms. You can read more about how we use it on our electrotherapy page.

Intersegmental Traction

This gently stretches the spinal joints to increase mobility. Because spinal discs rely on joint motion to circulate nutrients, restoring that motion helps address disc degeneration.

Trigger Point Therapy

Tight, tender areas within a muscle — knots — restrict normal motion and leave the muscle weaker. Using his hands and a vibracussor, Dr. Joe massages these points to promote a normal range of motion and faster healing. See our trigger point therapy page for more.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

High-frequency sound waves penetrate deep into tissue, creating heat and vibration that facilitate healing by breaking up toxins and accumulated deposits. More detail is on our ultrasound therapy page.

Whole Body Vibration Therapy

You stand on a vibrating platform and perform specific exercises to increase strength, range of motion, and balance. Sessions last 5 to 10 minutes depending on the areas being exercised and the severity of the injury. Benefits include reduced low back pain, increased flexibility, improved posture, healthier breathing, and increased strength and muscle tone — see whole body vibration therapy.

Class IV Laser Therapy

Low-level light therapy uses specific frequencies of light to facilitate healing. It penetrates deep into tissues and joints while also addressing conditions closer to the surface. The process is painless: light energy is absorbed by damaged cells, effectively kick-starting the cell’s power plant so it has more energy to devote to repair and healing. Learn more on our MLS laser therapy page.

Mechanical Intermittent Traction

A cycling stretching motion decompresses the disc and joint areas of the cervical and lumbar spine, promoting an increase in fluid and blood flow that supports your body’s natural ability to heal. For disc-related cases we also offer non-surgical spinal decompression.

Therapeutic exercises

Without regular exercise, muscles and ligaments weaken and develop fibrotic scar tissue, reducing the elasticity of the supporting muscles. In the spine, this results in uneven wear and tear of the spinal joints, which causes degenerative changes in the discs and soft tissues.

A therapeutic exercise program helps slow this degenerative process and restores tone and balance to damaged tissues. The benefits include:

  • Increases strength and range of motion
  • Retrains damaged muscles
  • Strengthens spinal structures
  • Speeds the healing process
  • Helps you hold your adjustments longer
  • Increases energy

Physiotherapy & Physical Rehabilitation FAQ

Still have questions? Contact us — we're happy to help.

What is physiotherapy at a chiropractic office?+

It's the rehabilitative side of your care. Dr. Joe combines physiotherapy modalities — traction, electro-muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, laser, whole body vibration — with a therapeutic exercise program, all built around the findings from your exam.

How do you decide which modalities I need?+

From your assessment. Dr. Joe reviews your medical history, performs a comprehensive physical examination, and refers for imaging when needed. Your care plan is then built around your specific condition and goals rather than a standard protocol.

Will I need X-rays or an MRI?+

Only when imaging will change your care. If your examination suggests it would help clarify the diagnosis, Dr. Joe will refer you for X-rays, an MRI, or other diagnostic imaging.

How long is a whole body vibration session?+

Usually 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how many areas are being exercised and the severity of your injury. You stand on the platform and perform specific exercises while it runs.

Do the physiotherapy modalities hurt?+

No. Electro-muscle stimulation, ultrasound, traction, laser, and vibration therapy are all comfortable — most patients describe a gentle warmth, tingling, or stretching sensation, and laser therapy is completely painless.

Why do I need exercises if the adjustment already helps?+

Adjustments restore motion; therapeutic exercise rebuilds the strength and balance that keep the problem from returning. It also helps you hold your adjustments longer, which is why the two work best together.

What conditions do you treat with physiotherapy?+

Auto accident and sports injuries, headaches, neck and lower back pain, sciatica, disc injuries, arm and leg pain, arthritis and joint degeneration, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee pain, plantar fasciitis, neuropathy, TMJ, and vertigo.

Will my insurance cover physiotherapy?+

Many plans cover rehabilitative care. We accept a wide range of insurance and also offer affordable self-pay options — send us your insurance details before your visit and we'll verify your benefits.

Do I need a referral to get started?+

No referral is needed. You can book directly, and your first visit includes the assessment that determines which physiotherapy services are right for you.
